Working with us
We usually do not actively recruit PhD-students, but interested and motivated candidates are always welcome to contact us.
It is always possible to conduct a Master project at the Konrad Lorenz Research station. Most students come from the University of Vienna, but students from other universities are welcome. A three-week practical training at the Research Station prior to the start of a Master project is mandatory. If you are interested in a master project at the Konrad Lorenz - Research Station, please contact us (firstname.lastname@example.org).
University courses / Practical training
A three-week training course can be conducted at the Konrad Lorenz - Research station (University of Vienna; Veranstaltungs-Nr.: 300089 PP: Ethologisches Projektpraktikum an der KLF Grünau; Prof. Kotrschal). We start on the first Monday of each month. The course is mainly an introduction into the practical aspects of behavioural biology and a prior visit of the lecture "Einführung in die Ethologie" (Prof. Kotrschal; University of Vienna) is recommended. Within the three weeks, students are introduced to our model species and will conduct a small study on their own. The course includes an introduction into data collection, field methods, data processing, statistics, scientific reading and writing. Housing will be provided at the Research station. Please note that this is basically a field course. Students must be prepared for long working hours (including the weekend) and data taking sometimes in cold or wet weather conditions. For more information please download our guideline. Since the members of the Research Station are international, fluently spoken English is required.
IMPORTANT: All students from Austrian universities interested in the three-week course need to co-inscribe at the University of Vienna for acceptance of this course; to register, it is mandatory to use the UNIVIS online registration system of the University of Vienna.
Students from foreign universities are welcome but need to contact their local supervisor for acceptance of this course. Longer periods of practical training are possible and dedicated students are encouraged to contact us.
To facilitate planning, please contact us at least 3 - 4 months prior to the proposed start of your stay at the Research station. For logistical reasons, we can accept a limited number of students per month only. Please confirm your participation 1 - 2 weeks prior to arrival at the research station.
VERY IMPORTANT: In the Alm valley, ticks occur very frequently and can transmit meningitis. We strongly recommend a vaccination against meningitis before coming here.
